"More than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK everyday."

Litter on our streets is not nice to see and makes our local area look untidy and uncared for. Common litter items include fast-food packaging, sweet wrappers, drinks cans, bottles, cigarette butts and recently disposable face masks!!

Research shows litter contributes to further crime and that people feel less safe in areas that are littered.

"The cost to the taxpayers for street cleaning is over £1 billion a year."

Litter does not clean itself away, it can take years to degrade causing harm to wildlife and habitats. Food dropped onto the floor can attract pigeons and vermin such as rats.

Local authorities have the powers to issue fixed penalty notices to individuals who drop litter, which should be a deterrent for most. However, not everyone who drops litter is seen by the authorities, causing a build up of litter throughout Britain

This is where our wonderful volunteers come in...

As a group we try to organise frequent litter picking events throughout the month. This entails groups of volunteers walking around the areas of Four Oaks, Mere Green and Roughley collecting any litter they find around community areas, along the path and in bushes for example.

To see when our next litter picking events will be please refer to our Events Calendar on the home page.

We are always looking for volunteers who want to join our team and help us make a difference in the local area. Come as a family, with your friends or on your own, all are welcome and the more people that join us, the more areas we can cover!

*all equipment is provided and no training is required, but please read the advisory notes below and risk assessment to ensure everyone volunteering is safe.

This year we have joined forces with the Sutton Coldfield Litter Action Group and their 'Adopt a Street' initiative. In which we have agreed to cover many streets in the Four Oaks, Mere Green and Roughley areas, to keep them clean and tidy.

This is a great idea from themselves with very successful
outcomes. Check out there
Facebook page for more information, and if you feel like joining up visit our
